Neuropsychological Assessment

We concern ourselves with those areas involved in reasoning and problem solving, learning and recall, selective attention and concentration, perception, sensation, language processes, and motor processes. These aspects of brain behaviour can affect learning, behavioural and social functions.

Psycho-educational assessment is designed to answer these questions:

Does the client have a learning disability(ies)?

Mental retardation?

Attentional problems?

What are the client’s academic and cognitive abilities, strengths, and weaknesses?

What are appropriate educational recommendations? Accommodations?

Psycho-educational assessment provides estimates of the client’s intellectual, or cognitive, abilities and educational achievement levels. It also yields recommendations relevant for educational planning. Sources of assessment data include background information, educational history, and records and data from tests of intelligence and educational achievement and, at times, ratings tests of attention, behaviour/emotions, and adaptive behaviour.

Psycho-educational assessment consists of an evaluation of psychological aspects of learning and of academic skills.

Psychological aspects include:

Planning (executive functions)
Language skills
Intelligence
Memory
Verbal and Visual Learning
Attention/Concentration
Fine motor skills
While the academic aspects include:

Spelling
Writing
Reading (Phonic skills, sight vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading fluency)
Mathematics (basic numerical operations, mathematical reasoning)
Academic Fluency (speed of reading writing and calculating)
Oral expressive skills
Consequently, we provide neuropsychological evaluations that assess neurocognitive functioning. These include cognitive skills, memory, executive function and several processing areas that are important in thinking and interacting with the environment. The information obtained is helpful in developing recommendations for treatment plans and educational and vocational planning.

Using neuropsychological information from the various assessments including the Mini QEEG, insight is gained on the brain’s functional skill areas and levels. Neurofeedback treatment is specifically directed to tap into the neuroplasticity of the brain and specifically at those identified areas of need to produce permanent improvement.

Also, with these assessments, we are able to evaluate the presence of learning difficulties and psychological disorders like

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Dyslexia
Dyscalculia
Anxiety Disorders
Psychosis,
Cognitive Slowing
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Post traumatic stress disorder
Depression
